K imberley Perrini arrived ten minutes early on Monday for her emergency meeting with Jake, taking a seat at the small conference table in his office. Holly had always admired Kim for her forthrightness, her resilience and the poise she’d retained in the face of the whole Blackstone’s scandal these past few months. As usual, she was impeccable in a dark green business shirt and long, tailored skirt, despite the touch of worry in her eyes.

“Jake isn’t running you too ragged, I hope?” she inquired.

Ragged? Holly’s pulse hitched. “No.”

“The man is quite…” Kim trailed off, looking thoughtful “…intense.”

Holly merely nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Thanks to last night, she knew more about him than she’d thought possible. Intimate things.

It was bad enough trying to maintain a professional workplace without letting Saturday night take over her brain. He’d invaded her dreams, hot, erotic ones that forced her awake in a tangle of sheets and a throbbing between her legs.

“This assignment won’t be for much longer,” Kim was saying. “We miss you in PR.”

“I miss it too.” Holly rose, retrieving a document from the printer while trying to squelch her thoughts. “Listen, I need to talk to you about something…” She trailed off as Jake, then Ric Perrini, walked in the door.

“Later, OK?” Kim was already turning away and Holly could do nothing but nod.

As Jake strode past with a murmured greeting, her body betrayed her. Her heart began to pound and her skin tingled. She glanced away, only to catch the intimate look passing between Ric and Kim, followed by a small smile on Kim’s lips and the answering gleam in her husband’s eyes.

They were in love. Despite their tumultuous past, they were deeply, head over heels in love. Holly barely had time to swallow her envy before Ryan strode in, shattering the moment.

“Have you seen this?” Ryan shoved the financial section onto the conference table as Garth entered and closed the door. The heading Takeover At Blackstone’s? blared out in bold type.

Jake shrugged. “The shares are stable.”

“For now,” Ryan replied, unconvinced.

“So some people have seen me about. It was bound to happen. We all know it’s no more true than Briana Out, Mystery Woman In.”

Holly flushed as all eyes turned to her. With his ex Briana Davenport, taken by Jarrod Hammond, did the press think she was Briana’s replacement? She glanced at Jake, whose mouth was curved in irony. Unable to look away, she focused on those lips for seconds longer than necessary.

Lips that she had imagined last night, kissing her in places she’d never think could react to such soft contact. Expert lips, warm and welcoming and completely open to taking their kiss further. Dangerous lips. Dangerous fingers.

Focus!

“Who? W-where?” she said, stammering.

“Us, in some gossip magazine. Seems we now have a personal relationship. First diamond shopping, then lunch. Who knows where it may lead. Perhaps an office liaison?”

He was mocking her. That green-eyed devil was actually mocking her!

“Which is a good lead-in to this meeting,” Kim said smoothly, turning to Holly as they were all seated.
